Brand strategist and Entrepreneur Sylvester Chauke has found that travel expands our mind and experiences, allowing us to see how similar we all are as humans regardless of where we come from.

What was your most recent trip?

I am answering this Q&A sitting at the W Hotel –  Montreal, Canada.

On a personal note, my partner and I were in Zanzibar, Tanzania for a short weekend R&R last weekend.

Where in the world have you felt happiest?

Thailand. There is that thing in the air. I laugh a lot more, I adore the culture, dance a lot, eat way too much, appreciate so much more, yet relax enough while feeling like I am doing enough too. Been going back for 11 years!! That must mean something.

Most uncomfortable travel experiences?

Travelled to Sao Paulo last year and made the worst choice of hotel that pretty much made the experience so wack! It didn’t help that the ceremony I attended was also so underwhelming – bordering on embarrassing. This was one trip to erase in my mind.

Which is your favourite city and why?

A tie between Milan and New York, for different reasons. Milan is whimsical and dreamy – a perfect spot to be off the grid but on the grid. New York has that heightened energy that makes you want to do amazing stuff and theatre nights on Broadway are the best!

What do you pack first?

Power bank and charger!

Which do you prefer, solo travelling or travelling with a favourite companion?

Travelling with a fave companion for sure!

Phiphi Island- Thailand

The best hotel you’ve stayed in?

Sharq Village in Doha, Qatar. So so lush. Stayed at the Villas and it felt like there was not a single soul around us. It was very special.

Sightseeing, adventure or sun lounger?

A bit of everything. But mostly sightseeing and theatre!

Most regrettable holiday souvenirs?

I think I went a little too big on the Budha statues in Bali. Other than that, I am generally a wiz on buying stuff I love.

Have you ever pinched something from a hotel room?

Tempted to pinch the entire bathroom at the Armani Hotel in the Burj Khalifa, Dubai – but logistics would have been a bit of a challenge.

Best dish you’ve eaten while abroad?

Smoked duck with smoked spaghetti with chili and a side of charcoal side bread and garlic butter at Another Hound, Siam –   Bangkok. Yummmmm.

How has travelling changed your life?

I realized how small the world actually is, the more I started travelling. Travel extends your experiences and expands your mind. You get to see that across territories and spaces, people are people just like you and I. Travel has also given me a heightened awareness on the role culture plays in cities and countries and the importance of acceptance and openness to understanding others.

Five destinations in your ultimate bucket list?

Orbit planet Earth with SpaceX.

Where are you off to next?

In the short term, Cannes, France for Cannes Lions and thereafter Miami, Florida. Looking forward to both.
